"Hi It's Me" is a vocal written by American musician Todd Rundgren. It was the first vocal he wrote, and was recorded by his group Nazz equally a tiresome ballad, released as the B-side of the ring's first single, "Open up My Optics", in 1968. A mid-tempo version of "Hello It's Me", recorded for Rundgren's 1972 solo album Something/Anything?, was issued as a unmarried in September 1973, reaching No. 5 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.

"Hello It'due south Me" was the get-go song written by Todd Rundgren.[1] Written in 1967 as a dull ballad about the breakup of a relationship,[2] it was released in October 1968 as the B-side of his band Nazz's debut single "Open My Eyes", and included on the debut album Nazz (1968). Although released as a B-side, it was picked up in preference to the A-side by Boston radio station WMEX, where information technology rose to No. one, and was later on picked upward by other stations. It entered the Billboard chart in February 1969, peaking at number 71, and re-entered the charts the following January, this time peaking at number 66. In Canada, it ranked number 41 in March 1969,[3] and number 58 in February 1970.[4]
Rundgren's songs in this early phase of his career were heavily influenced past the work of Laura Nyro,[ citation needed ] merely in a 2005 interview he revealed that the bones structure of the vocal was adapted from the introduction of a Jimmy Smith recording:
...the main influence for How-do-you-do Information technology's Me was an eight bar intro that Jimmy Smith played on a recording of When Johnny Comes Marching Dwelling house. He had this whole sort of block chord thing that he did to set up upwards the intro of the song. I tried to capture those changes, and those changes became what are the changes underneath Howdy It'southward Me. I then had to come up with tune and words, but the changes are actually virtually lifted literally from something that was, from Jimmy Smith'southward standpoint, a throwaway.

Rundgren recorded a more midtempo version of "Hello It'due south Me" for his 1972 solo album Something/Anything?. An edit of this version was released every bit a single in September 1973, over a year and a half after Something/Anything? and became Rundgren'southward only tiptop x pop hitting, reaching No. 5 on the Hot 100. It also reached No. 17 on the Adult Contemporary chart.[eleven]

Popular culture [edit]
- In 2022 the song was used during a pivotal scene in the premiere episode of And Just Similar That..., the Tv set sequel to the original Sex and the Urban center on HBO.[21] It was repeated at various points during the evidence's 2021-22 season.
- In the airplane pilot of the Fox sitcom That '70s Bear witness, the song was offset mentioned by Jackie Burkhart and it also played over the ending scene in which Eric Forman and Donna Pinciotti were lying on the Vista Cruiser. In addition, the cease credits featured Eric and the gang joyfully singing "Hello Information technology'due south Me" in the car while on their way to a Todd Rundgren concert. This scene was used again during the terminate credits of the show'south serial finale.
- Paul Giamatti's grapheme in the 2000 motion picture Duets performs this song in a karaoke bar.
- The single was used in a 2009 Tums advertisement.
- The vocal is used in the picture show The Virgin Suicides.
- Rundgren's version is used in the 2011 motion-picture show Paul.
